Bill Tuck passed away peacefully at age 88 with family by his side after a long battle with Parkinson’s. He was born in Syracuse in 1935 to Andrew E. Tuck Jr. and Marjorie Merrell Tuck (later French). Bill graduated from Phillips Academy (Andover), earned a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University (class of ’58), and an MBA from Syracuse University in 1971.
Bill enjoyed a long career with Crouse-Hinds Company. While studying at Cornell he worked for the company during summers, and in 1959 he began as a Field Sales Engineer. In 1998 he retired after more than 40 years, the last 11 years as President. After retiring, Bill taught Lean Manufacturing at Syracuse University and served on the Boards of Oneida Limited and Higbee, Inc.
He contributed to his community by serving on the Board of Trustees of Onondaga Community College, Community General Hospital and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the Century Club and Gyro Club.
Bill loved golf and was a longtime member of the Onondaga Country Club, including serving on the Board. He and his golf buddies were a tight knit group of colorful characters who called themselves The Dewsweepers. In 2001 renowned golf writer James Dodson published a book about them titled The Dewsweepers: Seasons of Golf and Friendship.
Bill was an avid painter of still life and birds. During the years the Tuck family lived in Pompey NY, he worked an abundant vegetable garden, and enjoyed cross country skiing.
He is survived by Toni, his wife of 59 years, and children Sarah Tuck, Jenifer Tuck (Dennis Derryberry), and Edward Tuck, older brother Andrew E. Tuck III (Leni Winn), and grandchildren Lila Derryberry and Claudia Derryberry.
The Tuck family thanks the staff at Loretto Cunningham 13th floor for their kindness and care of Bill in his final years.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (michaeljfox.org).
