Toula Assimon

Stamatoula “Toula” Assimon, (98), of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully at her home on September 7, 2026.

Born in Canton, NY in 1928, Toula was the fourth of seven children of William and Katherine Duskas, who emigrated from Tsintzina, Greece. After graduating from Canton High School in 1945, Toula went on to business school. She worked for a finance company and then for the St. Lawrence County Courthouse. Toula cherished the warmth of her large family and always appreciated the close-knit charm of her small-town community.

Toula met Peter Assimon while he was attending Canton ATC. Together, they shared 60 happy years of marriage and raised five children. Toula was a dedicated mother and homemaker who ran a busy household with care and love. In addition to enjoying their time with family and friends, Pete and Toula were fond of traveling, cheering on SU basketball, and serving as active members of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. Toula participated in St. Sophia’s bake sales, festivals, bible study and other activities; she was also a member of the Philoptochos Society.

When Pete suffered a stroke, Toula became his devoted caregiver, selflessly tending to his needs for 15 years. In later years she found great joy in the simple pleasures of life: visiting with family and friends, keeping up with current events, watching sports and game shows, and catching up with her grandchildren over the phone or in person. She was able to fulfill her wish of living in the comfort of her family home until her passing.

Toula met life’s many challenges with resilience, fierce determination and a tireless work ethic that inspired everyone around her.

Toula was predeceased by her husband, Peter (2009); her brothers, John, James and Michael Duskas and her sisters, Angeline Svolos, Artemis Cook and Urania Mahoney.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Mary, of Manlius; a son, William, of Fairport, NY; a daughter, Sue Anne, of Falls Church, VA; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Nick Dusckas, of Camillus and a son and daughter-in-law Michael and Tina, of Fayetteville. Toula is lovingly remembered by her ten grandchildren who affectionately called her Yia Yia. Peter, Magdalene, Christopher, Victoria (Alex), Jessica (Billy), Alexandra, Nicole, Erica (Chase), Carly and Luke. She was the proud great-grandmother of Noah, Sophia Toula, Theo and Wesley. She is further survived by her brother-in-law James “Tike” Assimon and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. William Berkery for the compassionate care, dedication and medical expertise that extended the lives of both their parents, allowing them many more cherished years together.

Also, a special thank you to Toula’s dedicated home care aides, Michele, Zamise, Karen, Betty, and Louanne whose care, kindness and companionship brought comfort to Toula and peace of mind to her family.

Calling hours will be on Monday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, Inc., 3175 E. Genesee St., Syracuse. Services will be held on Monday, September 14 at 1 p.m. at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Rd., Syracuse, 13224.
