Theresa B. Markert

October 29, 1925 — August 10, 2020

Theresa Byrne Markert died on August 10 in Syracuse. She was 94.

The daughter of Loretta McNeill Byrne and Francis S. Byrne, Theresa grew up in Syracuse. She was educated at Most Holy Rosary School and the College of St. Rose, earning a BS in Accounting. At Rosary, she met and was courted by Leonard P. Markert Jr., who she married in 1948. Theresa had great style and a flair for fashion, and enjoyed cutting a rug with her husband in their glory days. She was an accomplished knitter and master at needle point. Highly competitive, she was always open to a game of golf – she proudly hit a hole in one -- or bridge. Theresa vigorously pursued exercise, learning to ski in middle age and fiercely playing tennis into her 60s. When she couldn't participate in competitive sports, she began taking regular walks along the Erie Canal Walkway.

She became an avid bird watcher, and passed on her love of birds to her children who have all grown into active birdwatchers themselves.

She is survived by her children, Cynthia Rust, Patricia Aakre (Richard), Mary Markert Stopyra (Stephen), and Leonard P Markert III (Michaela), her sister Maureen Teelin (Thomas), thirteen grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Her brother, Francis Byrne (Father Joel), and her daughter, Lyn Hathaway, predeceased her.

Contributions in Theresa's memory may be made to: Onondaga County Audubon Society Inc. PO Box 620, Syracuse NY 13201 or Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club PO Box 5643, Syracuse NY 13220.

Funeral is private with arrangements made by Burns Garfield Funeral Home.
