Terry Cherny

Therese “Terry” Cherny born on January 13, 1931 in Moorenweis, Germany, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family. At just 20 years old, Terry married the love of her life, Mario, beginning a journey together that felt as though it belonged in both a romance novel & a grand adventure. With courage and hope, they crossed an ocean to build a new life in America believing deeply in the promise of inclusion, opportunity, and belonging.

Together, Terry & Mario owned & operated Terry’s Beauty Salon on Wescott Street for more than 50 years. What began as a business became something much more meaningful. Her clients became dear friends and her work became a reflection of her warmth, kindness, and genuine care for others.

For nearly 70 years Terry made her home on Euclid Terrace where neighbors became her family. She was a proud and active member of All Saints Church, a devoted catholic whose faith guided her life and grounded her in compassion, generosity, and love. Driven by a constant curiosity to learn, she embraced American sports and became an endlessly optimistic Syracuse University fan.

Above all else, Terry’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She is survived by her son Dr. Richard Cherny (Cynthia) and her daughter Susan Cherny (Tim Burpoe). She was a loving grandmother to Kimberly, Kristina, Katie, Tee, Grace, Maura, Joseph, Steven, and Michael. She was blessed with six great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy.

Terry’s life leaves behind a legacy defined by love, most especially the extraordinary love she shared with her husband. Married for 62 years before Mario’s passing, theirs was truly a story book romance. Despite coming from different backgrounds, a German Catholic & a Polish Jew, their bond transcended all differences. It was a powerful example of unity and acceptance. If there is one lesson to carry forward from Terry’s life it is this: to love without limits, to embrace & learn from others’ differences, to lead with kindness & inclusion just as she & Mario did.

Services will be held at All Saints Church, 1342 Lancaster Ave, Syracuse NY 13210, on May 2nd with a receiving hour from 10-11am followed by a funeral mass at 11:00, reception to follow, all are welcome.
