Samuel Cook Sanford

Samuel C. Sanford, of Manlius, New York, died April 5, 2024 at 90 years of age.  He was born April 10, 1933 in Syracuse, NY to Jane Nottingham Cook and Charles Hamilton Sanford Jr.  He resided in the Town of DeWitt area until 1946 when he moved to Interlaken, NY.

Sanford graduated from Interlaken Central School in 1950, Colgate University in 1954 and Cornell Law School in 1957, the year he was admitted to the New York bar.

Until admittance, he was employed by Mackenzie Smith Lewis Michell and Hughes.  In 1960 Sanford started his own practice, which continued until his death.  In 2007 the Onondaga County Bar honored him for 50 years of membership and service.

In 1960 he founded Sanford Fire Apparatus Corp. East Syracuse, a manufacturer of custom fire engines and a distributorship for fire and safety supplies.  He sold the venture in 1985. In 1982 Sanford started a mortgage bank, Commonfund Mortgage Corp., located in Syracuse.  It had several branches in Central New York.  

He is survived by his daughter Jane Sanford Cagwin (Lee), his son Samuel Cook Sanford (William Wendt), three grandchildren and a great grandchild.  He was predeceased by his wife Mildred “Midge” (Power) and his oldest daughter Karen, a victim of cancer.
