Russell J. Hamilton

d. Apr 27, 2026

Russell J. Hamilton, 85, of Syracuse, N.Y. passed away on April 27, 2026 in Newport Richey, Florida, with his beloved wife of 58 years, Judy, by his side.

Russ was born in Gloversville, NY, where he spent his early years before moving to Broadalbin, NY, with his mother and stepfather. He graduated from high school in 1957 and went to college at Mansfield State in Pennsylvania, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He returned to N.Y. where he taught school for many years, after which he was employed by SUNY Plattsburgh in the Admissions Office and later as Placement Director. He received his Masters Degree in Education at SUNY Plattsburgh.

In 1978, Russ and Judy moved to Syracuse, where Russ began working at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management. During his 29-year tenure there, he was the Director of the school’s first career center, Assistant Dean of the undergraduate program and lastly, Assistant Dean for college relations and undergraduate recruitment. He was known for his willingness to help students from across the university and for developing lasting connections to students and their families. Russ was a mentor to hundreds of students during his time at Whitman. His work across campus included 15 years as part of a university team that insured student-athletes complied with NCAA rules. He retired from the Whitman School in 2007.

Russ was dedicated to his career in Education but also loved his life with friends, family and always, “with the love of his life, his wife, Judy.” He will always be missed and loved.

Russ was predeceased by his mother, Marguerite Stutzke and step-father Martin Stutzke and his only sibling, Alice Taggart. He is survived by his wife, Judy, two brothers-in-laws and their spouses and many nieces and nephews, located locally and across the country.

At Russ’ request there will be no calling hours or service. Donations in Russ Hamilton’s honor may be made to the Whitman Opportunity Fund, Whitman School of Management, Syracuse University, to provide support for students in need.
