James "Ned" Deuel 80 of Syracuse NY passed away peacefully on January 2, 2022 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's and Dementia.
Ned was born in Broadalbin NY. He enjoyed sports playing basketball in high school. He was also an avid handball player at the downtown YMCA playing in several local and regional tournaments.
Ned graduated from SUNY Cortland. He began a 30 year career teaching Social Studies at Westhill High School and later at Cicero North Syracuse High School retiring in 1996. During his career he was the recipient of many awards including Who's Who Among America's Teachers and he was the 1990 North Syracuse Central Schools Teacher of the Year. He was an active union leader and a past President of the Onondaga County Teacher's Association. In 1976 he helped organize a teachers strike. It continues to be the only teachers strike in Onondaga County. Following retirement Ned went on to become an educational consultant and served two terms on the Syracuse City School Board.
Predeceased by his parents James "Jim" and Edna (Pitcher) and his brother Daniel "Danny". He is survived by his three children Jason of Syracuse NY, Jeremy (Nicki) of Charlottesville VA, Mollie of Charlottesville VA, his brother Richard "Dick" (Debbie) of Johnstown NY, grandchildren Avery and Brady of Charlottesville VA as well as several nieces, nephews and good friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a time to be determined in the near future. He will be greatly missed.
