Mildred P. (Mitzi) McDermott, passed away peacefully Friday, November 12, 2021 at the Nottingham. She was born May 28, 1934 to George and Mildred Peacock in Wauwautosa, WI. One of seven siblings, she attended both grade and high school in Watertown, NY. Mitzi completed her bachelors degree at Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY and studied Medical Technology in Baltimore, MD. She spent her career in the medical field working as a Microbiologist at Mercy Hospital in Watertown and Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.
A long time parishioner of St. Therese Church, and later Holy Cross Church, she was active in pastoral ministry to the sick, served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and became a Commissioned Minister in 1995 working in Pastoral Care at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. Mitzi also shared her talents through volunteer work with Hospice of CNY for 13 years.
She is predeceased by her parents and her husband, William J. McDermott, in 2005. Mitzi is survived by her sister, Martha Galloway, a large extended family including 35 nieces and nephews and countless friends.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 18 from 10 am -12 pm at Burns Garfield Funeral Home in Syracuse followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 pm at Holy Cross Church, East Genesee Street, DeWitt. Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.
Donations may be made to Francis House, Hospice of CNY or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Mitzi's family is grateful to the staff at the Nottingham who cared for her.
