Michelle E. Brisson passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, surrounded by loved ones.
She was born on February 21, 1953 in Beverly MA to Margaret Kelly and Wilbur Brisson. When she was three years old, her family moved to Camillus, NY to a wonderful working-class neighborhood full of children, noise and friendships.
Michelle always said she had lived several full lives. One of them ultimately led to the accomplishment of which she was most proud: 29 ½ years of sobriety. Her mother had paved the way, and took Michelle to her first AA meeting. She was always grateful for this extraordinary gift and the people in those rooms.
Michelle was full of lovely contradictions: irreverent, unable to suffer fools, cranky, loving, sensitive, self-deprecating, generous, funny, direct and quick with Irish wit. She enjoyed hiking, snowshoeing, pottery, tai chi and gardening. She also loved drum and bugle corps, musicals, Paris, the Old Forge Hardware Store, O'Neil's apple fritters, Beaver Lake, Syracuse baseball, the rocky North Atlantic coast, Serena Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, John Denver, Eleanor Powell, David Sedaris, Gannon's black cherry ice cream, the Camillus Memorial Day Parade and, most of all, The Great New York State Fair. Michelle co-owned an art and publishing business for two decades with her spouse, Amy.
In her late thirties Michelle graduated summa cum laude from SUNY Oswego with a degree in English. Like her father, Michelle was a reader, and she remembered him reading aloud Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare in lieu of bedtime stories.
Michelle is pre-deceased by her parents, Peg and Will. She is survived by Amy E. Bartell; three brothers: Ed (Doreen), Kevin (Sheryl) and Tom (Bonnie); many extraordinary nephews and nieces; dear friends; and the entirety of the ever-loving and high-spirited Kelly clan and Bartell family.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, June 15th at 11 a.m. at Delavan Center, (Room 200), 501 W. Fayette Street, Syracuse. Donations in Michelle's memory may be sent to: Friends of Beaver Lake Nature Center, 8477 E. Mud Lake Rd., Baldwinsville, NY 13027.
