Mary Hatalla Winters

July 29, 1948 — October 29, 2025

Mary Hatalla Winters, a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Utica, New York, and a longtime resident of Syracuse, Mary lived a life defined by compassion, courage, and unwavering love.

Mary lost her hearing at around seven years old, but she never let that loss define her. Instead, she grew stronger, learning to navigate a world that didn’t always make room for her. Through resilience and quiet determination, she built a life full of purpose, family, and faith. She worked for Onondaga County for more than 30 years, earning the respect and admiration of everyone around her for her dedication and work ethic.

She was the heart of her family — the one who held everything together. Mary raised her two sons, Michael R.C. Winters and Paul F.M Winters, with endless love and selflessness. She carried the weight of the world at times but never let it show. No matter how tough things got, the bills were paid, the house was cared for, and her children always knew they were loved.

Mary was known for her beautiful smile, her gentle heart, and her quiet strength. She never judged anyone and always tried to see the good in people. Her warmth could be felt without words, and her kindness spoke louder than sound ever could.

In her later years, Mary shared a special bond with Kara Clark, Paul’s fiancée of 12 years. Mary loved Kara dearly and was deeply grateful for her care, kindness, and support throughout the final chapter of her life.

Mary is survived by her loving mother, Olga; her brothers Peter, Ray, and Mike; her sister, Helen; her two sons, Michael and Paul; her cherished grandchildren; and by Kara, who became like another daughter to her. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul Winters Sr., who passed away on March 8, 2024.

Mary’s life was a story of perseverance, love, and grace. Though she lived much of her life in silence, her presence spoke volumes. She will be remembered forever for her compassion, her strength, and the love she gave so freely to everyone around her.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held in Syracuse, where her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Details will be shared with family and friends.

She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
