Mary (Maria) Delaporta Stathis, 93, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully at home on April 9th surrounded by loving family members. A graduate of Syracuse University (Phi Beta Kappa), Maria raised her 10 children and also taught Spanish at various schools in the area. Born in Syracuse, she was a lifelong member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox church. Maria was predeceased by her husband Demosthenes and sisters Helen and Barbara. She is survived by her sister Corina, 10 children Charles (Kathleen), Peter (Karen), Meka, Andrea, Hari, Demo (Maryellen), Billy (Donna), David (Maureen), Timothy (Ujvala), Rob (Linda), 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and her angel-sent caregiver Kris Brooks. She will be long remembered for her fierce determination in protecting her children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the charity of your choice. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 11 from 4-7 pm at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 E. Genessee St. Funeral services will be held at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, at noon on Friday.
