Mary D. Dates, of Syracuse, passed away January 20 at the age of 91. With relentless determination and spirit, she never slowed down – remaining active and independent. She is predeceased by her husband, Bryant (By) Dates, Jr.
Born and raised in Kenmore, N.Y., she and her late husband and four children moved to Syracuse in the late 1960s.
There was always music playing in Mary's house. She loved the opera. She also loved traveling, which she did up until the age of 90. Mary created many dear friendships throughout the years while playing bridge.
She worked in the administration office at Jamesville Dewitt High School for 20 years and still met monthly with her colleagues for lunch. She was an active member and volunteer at Holy Cross Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
Mary will be missed by her four children: Nancy Tourville; Susan Dates (Dennis Grover); Marnie Socci (Tom); James Dates (Shelly); eight grandchildren – Dave Tourville (Kristina); Kristen Tourville; Tom Socci, Jr.; Stephanie Ricci (Dominic); Matt Socci; Erinn Grover; Ella Dates; Claire Dates and four great grandchildren – Ethan, Olivia and Liam Tourville and Elliana Ricci.
Relatives and friends will gather Monday, January 28 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 4112 East Genesee Street, DeWitt. A celebration of her life will begin at 11 a.m. at the church with burial following immediately after at St. Mary's Mausoleum in DeWitt.
