Leroy “Lee” Strickland passed away on April 7, 2026, with Judy, his wife of 65 years, by his side. He was born on April 6, 1934, in Olean, New York, to Frank and Hattie Strickland.
Lee developed a love of music at an early age. After graduating from Olean High School, he attended Syracuse University on a music scholarship. Upon graduating, he became an original member of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in 1961, where he served as principal trumpet.
Lee went on to become a dedicated music educator in the East Syracuse-Minoa Central School District, where he taught for 35 years. He also performed for many years with the Syracuse University Brass Ensemble.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; his son, Frank; his daughters, Jennifer Richards (Troy),Holly O’Brien (Paul), Rachel Strickland (Dave Browne), and his granddaughters, Emily and Elizabeth O’Brien.
Lee was predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.
Music was Lee’s lifelong passion. In addition to his work with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, he performed with many internationally known artists, including Nat King Cole , Frank Sinatra, and Lena Horne when they appeared in Syracuse. He was also a devoted fan of Syracuse University athletics.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 17 from 10-11am at Trinity Fellowship 1235 Old Stonehouse rd. Jamesville, NY 13078. A funeral service will follow at 11:30am.
A private burial will be held by the family.
In Lee’s memory, the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to their local school music program.
