Joseph Burke, age 76, passed away on March 20,2024. A lifelong native of Syracuse, Joe was a skilled barber and hair stylist. He owned Pro HaIr Styling on Teall Ave. (formerly Le Baron which he opened at the age of 19.) In the 1970’s and 80’s. Joe was well-known as the owner and operator of the Hair Zoo on Marshall St. and Love Unlimited and Insomniacs, the downtown discos he opened, ran, and where he DJ’d. He loved music and earned the nickname “Maestro” for his encyclopedic knowledge of the music of his era.
Joe was also passionate about vintage cars and could be seen around town in his green 1952 Pontiac or white 1951 Pontiac which he rebuilt and restored by himself.
Joe gave new meaning to the phrase “good Joe”. He lit up a room with his presence and sense of humor. He loved talking about the past, growing up on the North side, school days, and old TV shows. His engaging personality allowed him to converse with anyone.
Joe will be deeply missed by his wife, Donna Koury and his closest cousins Frances Kalaska and Angela Kitts who were like sisters to him. He was predeceased by the three women who loved and raised him: his mother, Ida Sindoni, his grandmother, Angelina Sindoni, and his aunt, Sarah Principato. He was also predeceased by his uncles Matthew Sindoni and Frank Principato.
Calling hours are Thursday, April 4th at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home from 4-7pm. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 5th at 10:30am at the funeral home to share memories and stories of Joe. Burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends of Joe can also call at the shop on Teall on Saturday, April 6th from 12:30 -2pm.
Donations in Joe’s memory can be made to Hospice of CNY or the CNY SPCA.
