Jose Amado Benardete died on February 25 of sudden heart failure. He was born 24 March 1928 in Brooklyn New York, the son of Mair Jose Benardete and Doris Fox Benardete. He attended Midwood High School in Brooklyn and then went to the University of Virginia for undergraduate studies. He also received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Virginia. He came to the Philosophy Department at Syracuse University in 1961 where for over fifty years he was an inspiring scholar and teacher. In addition to many scholarly articles, he was the author of three books: Infinity (1964), Metaphysics: The Logical Approach (1989), and Greatness of Soul (2013). In 1961, he married Catherine Lord, also a Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University. His brother, the classicist and philosopher Seth Gabriel Benardete, died in 2001. Jose is survived by his wife Catherine, his brother Diego, his nephew Ethan, his niece Emma, and by Jane Benardete, the wife of Seth Benardete. There will be a calling hour 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM, on Monday, February 29, at the Burns Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 East Genesee Street, Syracuse, New York.
