Jack Loveland

September 24, 1937 — May 18, 2018

John R. (Jack) Loveland, 80, of Jamesville, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18, 2018. A life resident of Syracuse, he was the son of the late B. Churchill and Edith Loveland. Jack was a graduate of Nottingham High School and Syracuse University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and a Master's degree in Business Administration. Jack held a professional engineering license in nine states and culminated a 40-year career with O'Brien & Gere Engineers, Inc. by serving as President for twelve years.

An active member in many professional, business and civic organizations at the local, state and national levels, Jack served as President of the Consulting Engineers of New York State, National Director of the American Consulting Engineers Council, Executive Councilor of Tau Beta Pi, and President of the Syracuse Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He also served as Chairman of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Business Council of New York State, Member and Financial Advisor of Beta Theta Pi, President of the Erie Canal Museum, Chairman of the Town of Dewitt Conservation Commission, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the College of Engineering at Syracuse University, and General Chairman of the Onondaga County United Way Campaign. He was a proud member of the Onondaga Golf and Country Club where he served two years as Club President.

Beyond his professional success and community service, he was a loving and generous husband, father and grandfather. He traveled to 46 of our 50 states during his professional career, but his favorite places were the house he built in Jamesville and his home in St. Croix. He cherished time with his family and prioritized making memories over material things. He was known for his wit and wisdom, his smile and his hearty laugh.

Jack is survived by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn, three daughters: Laurie (Zenon) Werbowsky, Julie (Chip) Gorham, and Deborah (Bill) King; nine grandchildren and extended family Jeff Comanici (Cydney Johnson).
