Eleanor Theodore, age 92 passed away peacefully at home on January 15th. She grew up in Syracuse and was daughter to the late William and Helen Theodore. She was a graduate of Syracuse University, and Syracuse University Law School. She was the only woman in her graduating law class. She practiced law for over 50 years, 36 years of that time she was assistant corporation counsel for the city of Syracuse.
Upon her retirement, Syracuse Mayor Roy A. Bernardi declared 8 days of September 1977 Eleanor Theodore recognition days. She was also honored by several organizations in her lifetime. Monroe Abstract and Tile Company at an annual 'good guy' award for dedication to the legal profession honored Eleanor in September 1981. In October 2004 the Pan Macedonia Organization at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church honored her for her service to the church. In her acceptance speech she stated that this honor should also be given to the women during the early years of St. Sophia's Church on Montgomery Street for their dedication and solicitation of funds to help support the church.
In 2014 at a Clergy Laity conference in Cincinnati, Eleanor and fellow parishioners were honored as lay persons for their dedication and service to St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church. Each was each presented with an icon of Christ by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrius.
Eleanor was one of four members of the building committee for the construction of the new St. Sophia's Church on Waring Road in Dewitt. Peter Assimon, Ernest Macrides, James Paul, and Eleanor negotiated contracts and supervised the construction of the new church.
She was a member of the Parish Council for over 32 years and was elected four times president of the Parish Council of St. Sophia's Church.
Eleanor enjoyed gardening and making unique Christmas ornaments which she gave to her friends. She enjoyed traveling, especially to England and Nantucket with Dorothea. Eleanor also enjoyed meeting friends at the various organizations in which she was a member – Philoptochos of St.Sophia's Church, English Speaking Union, Corinthian Club, Zonta Club, and Syracuse Antique Club.
Eleanor was predeceased by her sister Dorothea (May 18, 2020). She is survived by many friends whom she considered sisters. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Rd. Syracuse. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery
