In the early morning hours of November 15, our "gentle cowboy" rode off into the sunset.
David, beloved husband, father, brother, friend, was born in Parkersburg, W Virginia on December 15, 1941 to Rader Wayne and Lillian Fenton Archer. For the next ten years his family moved several times, during which his sister Carol and brother Craig were born, settling in Syracuse in 1952.
He graduated from Nottingham High School in 1960, where he was a mult-sport athlete and a member of the all-city band. At Syracuse University he became an all-east performer and was drafted into the National Football League. He had the distinction of being the only player to play with SU legends Ernie Davis and Floyd Little.
While at SU he met Brenda, the love of his life, and they were married by David's father in 1964. David Craig (Sharon) was born in 1966 and James Christian (Susie) was born in 1970. While raising his boys David opened his heart to extend his family and pass on his giving spirit. That spirit continues in his grandchildren, Ryan Fenton, Jordan Elizabeth, Mitchell Wayne, Christopher John (CJ) and Fenton Grace.
He was into all things sports related, an avid SU fan and devoted follower of his sons' and grandchildrens' accomplishments. Dave and Brenda coached their sons' little league teams. He was involved in the SU Varsity Club, of which he was president for several years. He was an avid skiier and took many trips to the Canadian Rockies with his boys. Two weeks ago Dave's son Jamie was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame, a very proud moment for dad.
Dave was active in many service organizations. He was a life-long member of the Dewitt Kiwanis Club, president for several years, and was active with Meals on Wheels. He taught a class for seniors with progressive disabilities at Oasis. His kindness was evident everywhere. As a contractor, he remodeled many of his friends' homes, his creative touch on display all over Central New York.
In the last several years David's health declined. He made the best of it without complaint. Remember him with his ubiquitous cowboy hat, seeking to be your friend. Dave passed the same way he did everything... Gently
