On August 8, 2022, this world lost a strong, fearless and independent force, Carroll Arenander Sullivan Clark (74). Our beloved mother, sister, mimi/grammy, auntie, mother-in-law and friend, passed peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Carroll was born on October 15, 1947 in Ithaca, NY to Norman and Nancy (Merritt) Arenander. She was the oldest of two children. During her childhood, they moved to Washington, DC, before settling on Ambergate Road in Dewitt. Carroll graduated from Jamesville-DeWitt High School in 1964, where she was loved by many. She always lived her life with strong conviction and determination in everything she set her mind to.
A true pioneer, Carroll had a long and successful career at Merrill Lynch, breaking down barriers and setting the path for others. In August 1976, she became one of the first woman stock broker in Syracuse, where she served and befriended many clients for nearly 20 years. Carroll had a strong passion for our community, and strived to make a difference. She was active in many organizations and served on more than a handful of community boards. Carroll was an avid tennis and paddle player in the early part of her life and would hold “court” on many occasions. For the past 10 years, she developed a love for golf and immensely enjoyed her time with her friends at her Wednesday morning 9 hole golf league at Onondaga. Over the years, she made many wonderful friends, with whom she shared many deep, and sometimes colorful, conversations.
Carroll raised three incredible children and was a force in the lives of her four grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, niece and nephews. She is survived by her children, Merritt (Sullivan) Locke (Dick Weisz) of Utica, Jane (Sullivan) Amico (Brian Macrae) of Fayetteville, Christopher Clark (Marissa) of Utica, a sister, Susan (Arenander) Rathgeber (John) of Kensington, CT, four grandchildren, Madeline Locke, Will Locke, Katherine Amico and Chase Amico, 5 step grandchildren, a niece and 2 nephews, and many, many friends.
Carroll had an undeniable love for our country and the veterans who served it. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Clear Path for Veterans, attn: Carroll Clark Memorial Fund. 1223 Salt Springs Road, Chittenangeo, NY 13037.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 11, from 4-7 and a Memorial Service on Friday, August 12 at 1 pm, both at Dewitt Community Church, 3600 Erie Blvd, Dewitt, NY 13214. As this is a celebration of her life, colorful attire is encouraged.
