Carl C. Spencer Jr. was born in Philadelphia PA on January 10, 1937 to the late Carl and Olivia Spencer at Mercy Douglass Hospital. Carl was the second born of five children (June, Walter, Charles and Valerie). He was educated in the Philadelphia Public School system: Arnold Elementary and Fitzsimons Jr High. In 1954, Carl graduated from Central High (9th grade through 12th grade).
In addition to assisting in his parents' store, Carl worked as a newspaper boy and was on the safety patrol. He attended Jones Memorial church where he received baptism.
In 1958, Carl graduated from Howard University earning a BS Degree in chemistry and achieved induction into Phi Beta Kappa as well as Beta Kappa Chi honorary societies.
With the goal of becoming a physician, Carl graduated from Temple University Medical School in 1962 and then completed an internship at Germantown Hospital in 1963. Carl served in the military as a Captain in the Air Force from 1963 to 1965.
Carl met Monica Lucien during his internship at Germantown Hospital. United in holy matrimony in 1966, the couple became parents of one daughter, Stephanie Lucien Spencer.
Continuing his post medical education, Carl completed a Residency in psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University from 1965 to 1968. He worked as a psychiatrist for the New York State health care system for many years and maintained a private practice in Syracuse until 4 weeks prior to his transition.
Almost annually, Carl and Monica traveled to the Caribbean (Trinidad, Granada) to visit with his mother-In-Law Claire and Cousin Leroy Baptiste. Consistent with his interests in travelling, Carl attended continuing psychiatry education conferences in Hawaii and Kenya. He often talked about his Safari adventure.
Carl leaves to mourn his loss his wife of almost 55 years, Monica, and one daughter, Stephanie, of Arizona. Also grieving are his three remaining siblings: June Gaskin of Phila, Charles (Margaret) Spencer of Phila, Valerie Smith of Phila; nieces: Tirzah Spencer, Natasha (Carrington) Ward, Rosalind Smith, Malikah Smith, Nazaarah Sabree, Shahidah Sabree; nephews Gary Gaskin, Jonathan (Theresa) Gaskin, Charles A Spencer, and a host of other relatives and close friends.
