Dr. Barbara (Bobbie) Harris died on February 4, 2019 at Crouse Hospital. Bobbie was born on February 4, 1939 to Grace and Lewis Harris. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother William. She is survived by her cousins Goldis Starling Reel and Anne Starling York and Louise Richardson as well as many close friends. Bobbie was born on Long Island and spent her adult life in Syracuse. Bobbie graduated from Syracuse University School of Nursing with a baccalaureate degree in 1961. Bobbie also earned a Master's degree in Nursing from Boston University and a PhD from the School of Management at Syracuse University. Bobbie had a distinguished career in nursing service and education. She retired from Syracuse University as Professor emeritus. Dr. Harris was an active member of the American Nurses Association and Omicron chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society for nursing. She was awarded the Nursing Excellence Award and the Life Time Achievement Award by the Central Counties Professional Nurses Association. Along with faculty colleagues Evelyn Osborne and Rosemary Lape she developed a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at Syracuse University. A prolific writer Bobbie wrote a History of the College of Nursing and a History of the Central Counties Professional Nurses Association. She documented the World War II activities and accomplishments of Central NY Nurses and Physicians in the European Theater and presented papers on her findings at several local, state and national meetings. Dr. Harris was active in the New York State Archeological Society. Gardening was a special pleasure, she loved and propagated plants of all types. it was her joy to share cuttings with others. Dr. Harris was a caring educator, an excellent nurse and a loyal friend. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday February 20th from 10 am-12noon at Burns- Garfield Funeral Home 3175 E. Genesee St. Syracuse NY. A service will follow at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Lawn Cemetery, Farmingdale NY.
